Amanda Fink Takes Aim At Pac-10 Titles|
April 26, 2008
OJAI, CALIF. - For the fourth straight year, USC has pushed a player through to the Pac-10 Singles Championship match. Making her second career appearance in the title match is second-seeded Trojan junior Amanda Fink, who has plowed through competition in Ojai with straight-set wins across the board. She will face UCLA's fourth-seeded Riza Zalameda at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday (April 27) to the Pac-10 singles crown. Later in the day, Fink will get back to the courts, teaming up with Gabriela Niculescu to play for the Pac-10 Doubles Championship against Cal's Cossou/Ilcinkas.
USC has claimed two of the past three Pac-10 singles titles. The first-ever crown was claimed by Nicole Leimbach in 2005, and Lindsey Nelson won the title in 2007. Fink reached the 2006 final but fell to Cal's Suzi Fodor. This 2008 campaign for Fink has been a strong one, as the junior captured a string of straight-set wins leading up to this 2008 Pac-10 singles final appearance. On Saturday, Fink took down seventh-seeded Nadia Abdala of ASU with a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal decision to move into tomorrow's championship match against Zalameda.
But that won't be the end of the day's action for Fink. She will pair up with Gabriela Niculescu for the Pac-10 Doubles championship match in the afternoon. Second-seeded Fink/Niculescu's doubles run has seen lopsided wins by the Trojans down the stretch, capped by Saturday's 8-4 semifinal win over Cal's No. 4 seeded Babos/Kusano. The only other USC women's doubles team to claim the Pac-10 title was Lupita Novelo/Ginny Purdy in 1987.
