Day One Done In Ojai|
April 25, 2013
OJAI, CALIF. -- The USC women's tennis team worked through the first day of singles competition out at the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif., and are now setting up for doubles action starting tomorrow (April 26), when defending champs Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria take to the courts in the morning.
Christian will have a busy day, as she also had a successful run in the Invitational singles draw, where she'll compete in tomorrow's quarterfinals after grabbing two wins today. She and Ellie Yates were the only Women of Troy to tally two singles wins today. Yates, too, was fighting in the Invitational draw. She had a long day of matches extending into tiebreakers until she drummed up a 6-0 win in her final set of the day to move into the Round of 16 tomorrow.
In the Championship singles draw, Gabriella DeSimone and Giuliana Olmos got out of the gates with wins in the opening Round of 32, but fell in the afternoon's Round of 16. Zoë Scandalis, seeded sixth in the Championship bracket, was upended in the Round of 32.
Tomorrow (April 2), in addition to the ensuing rounds of singles play, both Championship doubles and Invitational doubles competition will begin with Trojans loaded up in both draws. Defending Pac-12 champions Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria are the top seeds for 2013, and will open up at 10 a.m. At 9 a.m., Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis are teamed up for Championship play as well in tomorrow's Round of 16. In Invitational doubles, USC's Gabriella DeSimone and Danielle Lao are tabbed as the top seed in that draw and start up action at 10 a.m.
