Pac-10 Sweep For Amanda Fink|
April 26, 2009
OJAI, CALIF. - USC made it a sweep of the 2009 Pac-10 Championships this weekend in Ojai, Cailf. Already the owners of their first-ever Pac-10 Team Championship coming into the individual action in Ojai, the Women of Troy emerged with the singles and doubles titles as well. Hauling in her first Pac-10 Singles Championship was senior Amanda Fink, who went on to put the finishing touches on the day by teaming up with her partner in success, Gabriela Niculescu, as the Trojan duo confidently defended their title to lay claim to back-to-back Pac-10 Doubles Championships with this year's win.
Now a senior, Fink was determined to shrug off runner-up finishes from her freshman and junior seasons at the Pac-10 Championships. This year, Fink powered her way to the 2009 title with today's straight-set win over Arizona's Natasha Marks in the singles final in Ojai, Calif. Hours later, Fink/Niculescu capped off the day with another straight-set decision to pocket the 2009 Pac-10 Doubles Championship. In doing so, Fink becomes the first female USC player to win the Pac-10 singles and doubles titles in the same year, and is the first to do so at the Ojai Tournament overall since 1917.
Together, USC's three-player tandem of Amanda Fink, Gabriela Niculescu and Alison Ramos gathered up enough wins in singles and doubles play at this year's tournament to lay claim to USC's first-ever honor as the Anson S. Thacher Trophy recipient - an award bestowed to the team that has made the winningest run through the Pac-10 Championships that year.
Fink's journey to her first Pac-10 Singles Championship carried the #27 senior through three-set matches in the first round against UCLA's #55 Andrea Remynse and a nailbiter in yesterday's semifinal against Stanford's #5 Hilary Barte. Up against unranked yet upset-minded Natasha Marks of Arizona in today's title match, Fink fought through a tight first set and then closed things down with a straight-set 7-5, 6-2 victory.
The win is Fink's 22nd consecutive singles victory, as the senior and her Women of Troy now turn to NCAA Tournament play. USC stands ranked No. 7 in the nation with postseason play coming up in May.
Alongside her for the postseason doubles push will be Gabriela Niculescu once again. Today, Fink/Niculescu came out firing as the pair aimed to defend the Pac-10 Doubles crown it won last year in Ojai. In this year's title match, Fink/Niculescu faced off against ASU's Abdala/Abdala and went to work quickly before pulling out the second set in a tiebreak to claim the championship with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory. In doing so, Fink/Niculescu became the first USC pair to post back-to-back Pac-10 Doubles Championships since Norwood/Levy did it in 1985 and 1986.
Another historic note on Fink's winning surge this year locks her in as the first player to boast a Pac-10 Team Championship, the Pac-10 Singles Championship and the Pac-10 Doubles Championship in the same year since Stanford's Marisa Irvin accomplished the trifecta in 1999.
