Big Wins By Amanda Fink Puts Senior Back In Pac-10 Title Matches

    April 25, 2009

OJAI, CALIF. - USC senior Amanda Fink pulled out a huge semifinal win today at the Pac-10 Championships, upsetting fifth-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford to force her way into another appearance in the Pac-10 Singles Championship match. Tomorrow morning in Ojai, Calif., Fink rides a 21-match winning streak as she goes up against Arizona's upset-minded Natasha Marks for a chance at the USC senior's first Pac-10 singles crown. Fink already owns the rights to the 2008 Pac-10 Doubles Championship, which she won with Gabriela Niculescu last year. This season, the pair has teamed up once again to similar success. Fink/Niculescu also posted a tense semifinal win today to take aim at back-to-back titles with a championship match tomorrow afternoon against ASU's Abdala/Abdala.

Amanda Fink came into the Pac-10 Championships as the #27 ranked player in the latest national rankings and was on a 17-match singles winning streak. She held court over #56 Andrea Remynse of UCLA, #76 Denise Dy of Washington and #85 Jessican Nguyen of Stanford before coming up against #5 Hilary Barte today. Fink's semifinal showdown with the Cardinal's highly ranked player was a battle, and ended up in a heart-stopping tiebreaker for Fink's 21st straight victory.

Fink had captured the first set, only to have Barte answer back to force a third. With a ticket to the title match hanging in the balance, the Trojan senior gutted out the victory and edged Barte 7-5 in the tiebreaker to tack up the 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) win that catapults Fink to the championship tomorrow (April 26). Fink will face Arizona's Natasha Marks at 9:30 a.m. in the singles final.

It's another full plate for Fink, who will pull double duty for the second straight season with a pair of title match appearances in Ojai. Playing alongside Gabriela Niculescu as the nation's #9 doubles duo, Fink has a shot at a Pac-10 sweep. Fink/Niculescu won the Pac-10 Doubles crown last season, and earned the chance to defend that title with a tense 9-7 win over ASU's #16 Hein/McKenna this afternoon in Ojai. The Trojans will go up against another ASU pair for the Pac-10 crown, facing #50 Abdala/Abdala at 2 p.m. tomorrow (April 26) on the courts at Ojai.
