    April 24, 2015

OJAI, CALIF. -- There's now a handful of Women of Troy who have Pac-12 title matches in their line of sight in Ojai. Today's action at the Pac-12 Championships saw Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis each haul in an impressive comeback victory in singles to punch tickets to tomorrow's semifinals in the championship bracket. Meanwhile, in the invitational draw, freshman Meredith Xepoleas forged a path to the singles semifinal there, while Gabriella DeSimone and Zoë Katz tacked up two doubles wins today to move into tomorrow's semis.

The morning began with Round of 16 doubles play. That's where Olmos and Scandalis' busy day got underway, as the duo opened with an 8-3 win over Colorado's Steur/Tiefel. That put #20 Olmos/Scandalis up against the top seeds, #2 Davidson/Zhao of Stanford, in the quarterfinals. The Cardinal pair got the 8-3 decision in that one to wrap Olmos/Scandalis' doubles campaign. Although the two would divide and conquer quite successfully in singles play. The top seed in the singles draw, Olmos faced No. 6 seeded Desirae Krawczyk of ASU in today's quarterfinals. Krawczyk won the first set, but Olmo regrouped and powered on to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback victory to secure a semifinal spot. So, too, did Scandalis, who was up against a familiar foe in No. 2 seeded Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA in her quarterfinal bout. Van Nguyen would get the early advantage with a first-set win, only to see Scandalis turn the tide and get in control for a come-from-behind victory of her own, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to move on. Olmos will face No. 4 seed Karla Fabikova of Cal in tomorrow's semifinal, while Scandalis squares off against UCLA's Catherine Harrison.

Also in action in the championship bracket today was freshman doubles tandem Gabby Smith and Madison Westby, who took an 8-5 loss to Arizona's #27 Austin/Preston in the Round of 16.

Over in the invitational draw, USC had another busy day of it. Three Women of Troy were in action in singles, with Gabby Smith and Zoë Katz each falling in tight quarterfinal matches. Freshman Meredith Xepoleas was a force to reckon with in her quarterfinal bout, though, coming through with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Colorado's Alexandra Aiello to take her place in tomorrow's semifinals against ASU's Joanna Smith.

In invitational doubles, USC's Gabriella DeSimone and Zoë Katz were practically unstoppable. The duo upended Utah's Najera-Salas/Rosa with a strong 8-2 decision in the morning's Round of 16 before silencing Stanford's Kostas/Tan 8-0 in the quarters. That puts DeSimone/Katz in the semifinals tomorrow against Stanford's Cheng/Richter.
