BERKELEY--The 10th-ranked women's tennis team overcame a commendable effort on behalf of No. 21 USC to defeat the Trojans, 5-4, today at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley campus.
Three of the six singles matches went to three sets with Cal edging USC in two of them. Amanda Augustus, the nation's sixth-ranked player, was tested by No. 42 Ditta Huber at the No. 1 position. Augustus dropped the first set, 6-4, before rallying to win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
No. 34 Esther Knox and No. 94 Veronika Safarova had a tight contest at No. 3 singles. With the score tied at 5-5 in the third, neither player was able to hold serve in the next four games and they entered a tie-breaker. Knox bore down to win the breaker, 7-3, and the match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Anita Kurimay also went to three sets at No. 4 singles, but failed to overcome Kara Warkentin's consistency on the baseline. Kurimay lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
