Women's Tennis Falls to Cal 5-4

    April 18, 1998

BERKELEY--The 10th-ranked women's tennis team overcame a commendable effort on behalf of No. 21 USC to defeat the Trojans, 5-4, today at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley campus.

Three of the six singles matches went to three sets with Cal edging USC in two of them. Amanda Augustus, the nation's sixth-ranked player, was tested by No. 42 Ditta Huber at the No. 1 position. Augustus dropped the first set, 6-4, before rallying to win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

No. 34 Esther Knox and No. 94 Veronika Safarova had a tight contest at No. 3 singles. With the score tied at 5-5 in the third, neither player was able to hold serve in the next four games and they entered a tie-breaker. Knox bore down to win the breaker, 7-3, and the match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

Anita Kurimay also went to three sets at No. 4 singles, but failed to overcome Kara Warkentin's consistency on the baseline. Kurimay lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

For the second straight day, the Bears entered doubles play needing one win to clinch the team victory. Today, it came at No. 1 doubles, where Augustus and Amy Jensen breezed by Huber and Jacqui Boyd, 8-1.

Today's victory wrapped up Cal's home schedule. The Bears will visit USC on April 22 to complete a match that was rained out on April 3. Cal leads the Trojans, 4-1, in that contest. The Bears will then travel to Ojai next for the Pac-10 individual championships to be held April 23-26.
