No. 2 UCLA Women Claim 4-1 Win Over No. 12 USC
April 18, 2014
WESTWOOD, CALIF. -- The No. 12 USC women's tennis team took a 4-1 loss to No. 2 UCLA in the final match of the 2014 regular season today in Westwood. USC's Giuliana Olmos was able to tally a point for the Trojan cause, but the Bruins proved stronger down the line today. UCLA stole away a tight doubles point before managing singles wins on the top three courts to hand USC the loss. The Trojans go to 16-7 overall and finish Pac-12 play in fourth place at 7-3.
The Bruins boasted the top-ranked doubles team in the nation in Anderson/Brady, and the pair came through with the first win of the day with an 8-3 decision over USC's Brynn Boren and Giuliana Olmos on court one. The Trojans tightened things up with comeback pushes on courts two and three, forcing tiebreakers to decide both. At the No. 3 spot, USC's Gabriella DeSimone and Zoë Katz pulled out the 8-7 (4) win over UCLA's Dolehide/Van Nguyen to force the issue. That left things up to court two, where, USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Zoë Scandalis had fought back from a deep deficit to take that one into a tiebreaker as well. In the end, UCLA's #6 Harrison/McPhillips pulled out the 8-7 (4) win to put the first point in the Bruins' column.
The Women of Troy would fire back at the Bruins and even the score when #77 Giuliana Olmos mustered up a powerful 6-3, 6-1 victory over UCLA's #72 Catherine Harrison at the No. 5 spot. But that would be the only upset that the Trojans would be able to pull off in singles play today. The Bruins boasted high seeds on all but court six -- where USC freshman #93 Zoë Katz had forced a third set against Kaitlyn Ray -- and the advantage would pay off for the hosts today. At the No. 3 spot, UCLA's #30 Kyle McPhillips delivered a 6-1, 6-2 win over USC senior Kaitlyn Christian to take the Bruins to a 2-1 edge in the match. Then, #2 Robin Anderson registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over USC's #26 Zoë Scandalis on court one to make it a 3-1 UCLA lead. With a third set underway on court six and a three-setter looming on court four between USC's Gabriella DeSimone and UCLA's #13 Chanelle Van Nguyen, UCLA was able to put an early stop to action when #10 Jennifer Brady delivered a 6-2, 6-1 win over USC's Brynn Boren. That wrapped the match as a 4-1 UCLA victory to bring the regular season to a close for both teams.
USC now turns to individual action at the coming Pac-12 Tournament in Ojai, Calif., running April 23-27.
