Women's Tennis Beats No. 10 Cal, 5-2|

LOS ANGELES - The seventh-ranked USC women's tennis team moved one step closer to capturing the 2004 conference championship by defeating No. 11 California (16-7, 4-3 Pac-10), 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Women of Troy, who improve to 16-5 overall and 7-0 in the Pac-10 with the win, will face top-ranked Stanford on Saturday, April 17, at noon for the title.
USC started the match by winning decisively at No. 1 and 3 doubles for the first point of the afternoon. No. 16-ranked Luana Magnani and Carine Vermeulen earned an 8-2 upset-victory over Cal's 14th-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones and Jieun Jacobs at center court. Despite dropping the match at No. 2, Judy DeVera and Bernadette Bayani collected an 8-4 win over Catherine Lynch and Jessica Shu at No. 3 to capture the point.
Anca Anastasiu began singles play with another convincing upset, beating 31st-ranked Sasha Podkolzina, 6-3, 6-0, at court three. Simultaneously, Cal managed to earn its first point at No. 5 and Bayani put USC ahead 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6. Vermeulen clinched the match for the Women of Troy with her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jacobs at No. 2 and Dianne Matias gave USC its fifth point with a win at court four.
With the match decided, Magnani and No. 5-ranked Kops-Jones continued to battle at center court. After dropping the first set, Magnani was down 5-3 in the second but broke serve to knot the set at 5-5, and again at 6-6. But Kops-Jones took the breaker 7-3 for the 6-4, 7-6 match victory.
