No. 1 Stanford Hands No. 4 USC Women First Pac-10 Loss, 6-1|
April 8, 2006
PALO ALTO, CALIF. -- Against the top team in the country, undefeated Stanford, the fourth-ranked USC women's tennis team got another winning performance from junior Anca Anastasiu, who is undefeated in dual match singles play this year. The strength of the streaking Cardinal was too much for the Women of Troy however, as they lost their first Pac-10 match of the year with a 6-1 loss to Stanford -- the Cardinal's 94th consecutive home victory. USC is now 13-3 overall and 4-1 in Pac-10 play.
Unlike the last nonconference meeting between the two teams, USC was unable to pull out the doubles point, falling in all three positions. Back in singles action after being sidelined with illness was USC's #51 Lindsey Nelson, who faced #19 Amber Liu in the No. 1 singles match but fell 6-4, 7-5. #9 Amanda Fink, #49 Luana Magnani, #28 Dianne Matias all dropped their matches to higher ranked opponents, and Carine Vermeulen fell in her No. 6 match to #35 Celia Durkin.
The highlight of the match for the Trojans was Anca Anastasiu's marathon 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win over #41 Whitney Deason at the No. 5 position, grabbing the Trojans their only win of the match and pumping Anastasiu to a 14-0 record in dual match singles play.
The Trojans next face No. 13 California on Sunday in Berkeley as the teams resume a match begun on Friday, but which was postponed due to rain. USC leads the match 2-0.
