April 5, 2014
PALO ALTO, CALIF. -- The No. 13 USC women's tennis team came up empty in today's showdown against No. 4 Stanford in Palo Alto, falling 4-0 to the Cardinal to wrap up its road trip through the Bay Area. Stanford had the upper hand with higher ranked players down the line as it was able to notch the Pac-12 win over the visiting Women of Troy, avenging the loss that USC had served the Cardinal last season during conference competition. USC is now 14-6 overall and 5-2 in Pac-12 play.
The Cardinal captured the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts to pocket the early advantage. In singles action, senior Brynn Boren was the lone Trojan to pull off a win in the first set, beating #39 Krista Hardebeck 8-6 in a tiebreaker to give the Trojans a lift. She'd wind up just a breath away from victory when Stanford was able to sidestep and clinch the match with its string of singles wins. #28 Carol Zhao topped USC's Gabriella DeSimone 6-2, 6-3 on court three to get Stanford a 2-0 lead. At the No. 6 spot, #37 Caroline Doyle claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over USC's #90 freshman Zoë Katz, and then the match would wrap up with a Stanford win on court one. There, USC's #26 Zoë Scandalis was up against Stanford's #2 Kristie Ahn, and the highly ranked Cardinal managed a 6-2, 6-3 win to clinch the win for the hosts. Kaitlyn Christian had made moves to force a third set in her No. 4 singles matchup with #27 Taylor Davidson when action was suspended, and #69 Giuliana Olmos was trailing #42 Ellen Tsay on court five.
The Women of Troy now return home to Marks Stadium for another set of Pac-12 matches. USC will host Arizona State at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (April 11) before taking on Arizona at 12 p.m. on Saturday (April 12).
