March 31, 2007
EUGENE, ORE. - The No. 4 USC women's tennis team grabbed a road win on Saturday, positing the Trojans' ninth straight dual match win with a 7-0 decision over host Oregon. USC improves to 14-2 overall and is now 3-0 in Pac-10 action with the win.
The only place that Oregon grabbed the upper hand was in one doubles match. USC's Anca Anastasiu / Amanda Fink - playing together for the first time this season - were topped by Oregon's Hirt/Seremeta at the No. 2 position. But that would be all the Ducks would be granted in the match. #31 Sarah Fansler / Dianne Matias knocked down Powaska/Hoz de Vila 8-6 at No. 3, and No. 1 pair Lindsey Nelson / Julie Smekodub were able to pull out a hard-fought win against a competitive Dieskova/Olivos pair, 9-8 (2) to secure the doubles point for USC.
From top to bottom, USC pulled out singles wins across the board. At No. 1, #12 Sarah Fansler grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Oregon's top gun, Dominika Dieskova. At No. 2, #8 Lindsey Nelson beat out Ana Cecilia Olivos 6-0, 6-3. At No. 3, #117 Amanda Fink won in a 10-point tiebreaker when her match went into a third set, notching the sophomore's fifth straight singles win. With the match already decided, Fink edged out her opponent for a 4-6, 6-6, (10-6). Meanwhile, Anca Anastasiu would tack up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Monica Hox de Vila, and #92 Dianne Matias beat Anna Powaska 6-3, 6-1 from her No. 5 spot. At No. 6, Julie Smekodub pinned up a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Claudia Hirt, helping USC to its third Pac-10 win of the year.
USC continues its Pac-10 run next week with a road trip to Arizona. The Women of Troy first visit Arizona for a 1:30 p.m. match on Friday (April 6), then go to face ASU at noon on Saturday (April 7).
