LOS ANGELES --- The No. 13 USC women's tennis team fell for the second time in as many days with a 6-1 loss to No. 2 Stanford Saturday afternoon at Marks Stadium. The Trojans never got on track as they began the day dropping the doubles point and then proceeded to lose five of six singles matches. The Trojans fall to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-10 with the loss. The Cardinal move to 16-0 (4-0) with the victory.
The #7 tandem of Christian/Sanchez had USC's spirits soaring early after a 8-5 win over #2 Barte/Burdette to start doubles play but the team wasn't able to pocket another win to take advantage of the upset. Stanford's Ahn/Gibbs were able to defeat #11 Pulido/Ramos 8-3 on court two and then Lao/Kinstler fell to McVeigh/Tan 8-5 in the No. 3 spot to seal the point for the Cardinal.
Entering singles action with the point advantage, Stanford quickly stretched their lead and USC was never able to catch up. Alison Ramos wasn't able to get by #51 Stacy Tan losing 6-1, 6-3 on court five. Next, #25 Danielle Lao was taken down in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot.
Down 3-0 early, #1 Maria Sanchez was able to shine under pressure as she dazzled in her 6-3, 6-3 win over #2 Hilary Barte to keep the Trojans hopes alive.
Unfortunately for USC, with the contest on the line Valeria Pulido was forced to retire in the third set of her match with #21 Kristie Ahn due to a lingering foot injury and the Trojans fate was sealed. Play continued in the No. 3 spot as Kaitlyn Christian was defeated 6-3, 7-6 (6-3) by #11 Nicole Gibbs. The day ended on a sour note as Cristala Andrews took a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) loss to Carolyn McVeigh on court six.
