No. 13 USC Women Can't Fight Off Bears|
March 25, 2011
LOS ANGELES - The No. 13 USC women's tennis team faced one of its toughest challenges of the season Friday afternoon at Marks Stadium and came up short in a 5-2 loss to No. 10 Cal. The Trojans looked to be in good shape as they won the doubles point to start the match but things then fell apart as they lost five of six singles matches. USC falls to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10 with the loss. The Bears move to 12-4, 3-0 with the victory.
Doubles play didn't start as planned for the Trojans as the #11 team of Pulido/Ramos fell to Goransson/Schutting 8-1, in Valeria Pulido's first match back since being sidelined with an injury. USC quickly rebounded as Lao/Kinstler took down Davis/Duranteau 8-2 on court three. With the point up for grabs, #7 Christian/Sanchez picked a perfect time to upset #3 Andersson/Juricova 8-5 on center court. Unfortunately for the Trojans, everything went downhill from there.
Cal was able to get singles action rolling in their favor as #48 Tayler Davis beat Alison Ramos in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 on court five to square the match up at 1-1.
Kaitlyn Christian then struck back for the Trojans with an impressive 6-0, 6-4 win over #57 Annie Goransson from the No. 3 slot to put USC back on top.
Cal would then go on a tear of four straight wins to put the Trojans away. Valeria Pulido, also making her return to singles play, couldn't get by Anett Schutting as she fell 6-4, 6-4 on court four. Next, Cristala Andrews also was defeated in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 slot. With Cal's lead mounting, #25 Danielle Lao battled on court two with Mari Andersson in a spirited contest before dropping the match 6-4, 6-4 to seal the win for the Bears.
With the match decided, the day's premier matchup continued on center court. After her three-set win over #4 Jana Juricova at the ITA National Indoor Championships earlier this season, #1 Maria Sanchez came into the day with a 22 match win-streak. The two traded blows as Sanchez was able to take the first set in impressive fashion 6-2. Juricova rallied back to take the next two frames 6-2, 6-1 to hand Sanchez her first loss since October 25, 2010. Juricova was able to extend her winning streak to 15 matches with the victory.
USC returns to action Saturday (March 26) at 12 p.m. as it hosts #2 Stanford at Marks Stadium.
