March 24, 2004
LOS ANGELES - In the first of back-to-back matches with local teams, the eighth-ranked USC women's tennis team defeated No. 41 San Diego, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. With their eighth-consecutive win, the Women of Troy improve to 12-3 this season, while the Toreros fall to 6-6.
The Trojans began the match by sweeping doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. USC seemed to secure victories on courts one and two with ease, winning by an 8-2 and 8-4 score, respectively. The closest match was played at the No. 2 spot as Anca Anastasiu and Dianne Matias got past San Diego's Lauren Kazarian and Lauren Perl, 8-6.
After winning her doubles match with partner Carine Vermeulen on center court, junior Luana Magnani was forced to sit of singles play due to food poisoning. With the 13th-ranked Magnani out at No. 1, the Women of Troy moved up a spot and Melissa Esmero entered the singles lineup at No. 5.
Vermeulen was the first to finish, beating Perl, 6-3, 6-3, and senior Bernadette Bayani finished shortly after with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Catherine Hepple at the No. 6 spot. USC endured one of only two losses at No. 2 when Emma Murphy beat Anastasiu, 6-2, 6-2, before Matias clinched the Trojan victory with a win at No. 3. Matias defeated Tara Livesay, 6-4, 6-1.
The Women of Troy return to the court tomorrow when they host Loyola Marymount at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
