USC Women Roll To Victory Over Waves

    March 12, 2011

MALIBU, CALIF. -- The No. 16 USC women's tennis team locked in on its 10th win of the year with a 5-2 victory over No. 30 Pepperdine on Saturday. The Women of Troy followed up the doubles point with a pair of singles wins before Cristala Andrews came through with the clincher. USC improves to 10-2 overall with today's road win over the Waves.

The Trojans tacked up two solid doubles wins on courts one and three to secure that first point of the day. At No. 1, USC's #20 Christian/Sanchez pulled away from Pepperdine's Colffer/Zalameda for an 8-1 win before Andrews/Ramos got through an 8-3 victory over Issara/Oates at No. 3. The Waves got an 8-5 win at No. 2 over USC's Kinstler/Lao, but the Trojans already had the first point pocketed, and the teams were on their way to singles action.

The Trojans' top-20 tandem on the top two singles courts propelled USC to a 3-0 lead in the match. #2 Maria Sanchez pinned up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pepperdine's Arianna Colffer at the No. 1 spot, and then #18 Danielle Lao made her move with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anamika Bhargava at the No. 2 position. The deciding point was still up in the air, however, and Pepperdine struck back first when Andrea Oates topped USC's Lyndsay Kinstler 6-2, 6-3 from court six. The victory was then clinched from the No. 5 slot, where Cristala Andrews knocked out Khunpak Issara with a 6-4, 7-5 decision that made it 4-1. Meanwhile, on court four, Pepperdine's Marie Zalameda was able to rebound from a first-set loss to USC's Alison Ramos to generate a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win for the Waves to make it 4-2 before USC freshman #113 Kaitlyn Christian pulled out the 10-point tiebreak in the third to win her No. 3 singles match over Ale Granillo 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 and close down competition in Malibu for the day.

USC stays in town next week for a pair of home matches at Marks Stadium. The Trojans will host Syracuse at 12 p.m. on Tuesday (March 15) before facing Arizona State at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (March 16).
