Baylor Edges USC Women 4-3
March 11, 2014
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 10 USC women's tennis team got a slow start in today's Tuesday matchup against visiting No. 17 Baylor, and the Bears' early advantage would help them hold on for a 4-3 win over the host Women of Troy. USC goes to 9-4 overall with the loss.
In doubles, USC's new pairings for the day saw juniors Gabriella DeSimone and Zoë Scandalis notch the first win on an 8-2 decision at the No. 3 spot. But Baylor fired back and got wins on court one over USC's Boren/Christian and then at the No. 2 spot over USC's Katz/Olmos -- two pairs teamed up for the first time this year.
With the first point of the match in Baylor's hands, the Bears would make it a 2-0 advantage when Blair Shankle topped USC freshman Zoë Katz 7-5, 6-2 on court four and then Jordaan Sanford handed out a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Giuliana Olmos at the No. 3 position. Senior Brynn Boren put a stop to the Baylor efforts with a gutsy 7-5, 7-5 win over #68 Ema Burgic on court two next, however, and USC was on the board with a 3-1 deficit to get to work on. With three-setters looking possible on the remaining courts, Baylor's #52 Kiah Generette was able to sidestep an extended match against USC's #25 Zoë Scandalis on court one. Generette stole away the clincher with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Scandalis to give Baylor a 4-1 lead.
That left USC's Gabriella DeSimone in her third set at the No. 5 spot, while Kaitlyn Christian was pushing for a third on court six. DeSimone's opponent Victoria Kisialeva would have to retire from the match, unfortunately, putting a point in USC's column to make it 4-2 before Christian came through with by capping the day with a comeback win on court six. She'd top Alex Lay 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to wrap things up at 4-3 at Marks Stadium.
The USC women now turn to take a road trip later this week. The Women of Troy will visit Colorado first in a 1:30 p.m. MT matchup in Boulder on Friday (March 14) before heading to Salt Lake City to face Utah at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday (March 16).
