    Women's Tennis Defeats Crosstown Rival UCLA, 4-3

    LOS ANGELES - No. 13 USC (7-1, 1-0) defeated No. 10 UCLA (6-4, 0-1), 4-3, on Wednesday, March 9, at Marks Tennis Stadium to open up Pac-10 play.

    Freshman Lindsey Nelson, ranked 16th nationally, remained perfect at 8-0 this season in singles and doubles play, with a 6-2, 6-3 singles victory over UCLA's Riza Zalameda and a 8-4 doubles victory alongside Anca Anastasiu over Laura Gordon and Elizabeth Lumpkin.

    The win is the Trojans' fifth in the past six matches over the Bruins.

    The Women of Troy started doubles play by earning the point from positions two and three. UCLA's third-ranked doubles combo of Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda took the first doubles match, 8-1, over USC's Nicole Leimbach and Carine Vermeulen at court No. 1. The Trojans responded though taking the next two. Besides Nelson and Anastasiu's win at court No. 2, the Women of Troy's Diane Matias and Judy DeVera clinched the doubles point, 8-4, over Sarah Gregg and Tracy Lin.

    In singles, the Trojans won the first three matches to secure the win. The Trojans' Vermeulen pushed her record to 7-1 with a victory over the Bruins' Lin, 6-2, 6-2, at court No. 5. USC's Anca Anastasiu followed suit also running her record to 7-1 with a victory over UCLA's Gregg, 6-2, 6-2, at court No. 3. Nelson then clinched the match for the Trojans at court No. 2 over the 19th-ranked Zalameda. UCLA kept it close taking the next two matches and a default at court No. 6 to close out the day.

     

     

    USC next heads north to face Washington State on Friday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m. in Pullman, Wash. And Washington on Saturday, March 12, at noon in Seattle.
