March 3, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 2 USC women's tennis team wrapped up the week with a win to boost its overall record to 10-2 on a 6-1 victory over No. 70 San Diego today. The Trojans cruised out of reach of the Toreros with a run of dominating singles wins on courts four, five and six, as Valeria Pulido clinched things at her No. 6 spot.
The Women of Troy featured a new blend of doubles pairings to open the day, with the matchup of Danielle Lao and Sabrina Santamaria proving potent in an 8-1 win on court three. Kaitlyn Christian and Valeria Pulido did solid work on court one, meanwhile, for an 8-6 win that secured the first point of the day for the Trojans.
In singles, the bottom of the ladder flexed its muscle, as no Trojan on those courts gave up more than three games in their respective matches. #84 Kaitlyn Christian posted a 6-3, 6-0 win to make it a 2-0 USC lead first, and Gabriella DeSimone pinned up a resounding 6-1, 6-1 win from her court five spot next. Valeria Pulido pushed through to the heroic win from court six next, taking down her Torero foe 6-2, 6-1, and the win was in USC's hands. #13 Zoe Scandalis kept with the trend and rolled through Stephanie Haoffpauir with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the top of the lineup to make it 5-0 next. On court three, #26 Sabrina Santamaria had to concede San Diego its only point of the match when she retired due to injury. That left #16 Danielle Lao to wrap things up from court two, and the junior got it done in a third-set tiebreak to tally her 14th consecutive singles win.
USC's next action brings Washington State to town for a 10:30 a.m. Pac-12 clash on Saturday (March 10) at Marks Stadium.
