Women's Tennis Back On Track With Win Over Pepperdine|
Feb. 28, 2004
LOS ANGELES - The strong winds continued, but the rain held up, as the 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team played its first match in 20 days and defeated 29th-ranked Pepperdine, 7-0. The win broke the Women of Troy's three-match losing streak as the team improved to 5-3 overall. The Waves dropped to 5-4 on the season.
The long break did give the Women of Troy ample time to recover from injuries as junior Luana Magnani and freshman Judy DeVera were back in the starting lineup against the Waves. Magnani had been hampered by shoulder injuries, while DeVera suffered a sprained ankle on Jan. 30.
Pepperdine's only win of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles as Natalie Braverman and Merve Asimgil upset USC's ninth-ranked duo of Magnani and Carine Vermeulen, 8-4. Following the loss, the Women of Troy won at courts two and three to earn the first point of the match.
In singles, the Trojans collected two-set victories on five-of-six courts. Anca Anastasiu, Judy DeVera and Bernadette Bayani posted USC's first three points to secure the victory by giving the Women of Troy a 4-0 lead. Vermeulen and Dianne Matias followed with wins at the No. 2 and 4 positions.
Magnani was the last off the court as she came back after dropping the first set to defeat Pepperdine's Braverman, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.
USC returns to the courts on Wednesday, March 3, to face UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m. The match will be the second Lexus Gauntlet match-up of the season fo the two teams.
