TUCSON, ARIZ. - The No. 12 USC women's tennis team got a road win on Friday, pushing out to a 6-1 win over No. 52 Arizona in Tucson. USC improves to 7-2 with the win, which was anchored by a solid doubles performance and five straight-set wins in singles including Amanda Fink's match-clinching win at the No. 2 position.
USC swept doubles play, sparked by an 8-1 win at the No. 2 slot by the senior-freshman combo of Nelson/Sanchez. Fansler/Kinstler followed with an 8-3 victory at No. 3, and Fink/Niculescu cleaned things up with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
In singles action, USC came out of the gates with Sarah Fansler's smooth 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot for a 2-0 USC lead. Gabriela Niculescu got the Trojans within a point of clinching the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Amanda Fink got things done from her No. 2 position in a 6-2, 6-2 win to lock away the win for USC. USC's freshman tandem at the 5-6 slots put wins on the board next for the Trojans, as Maria Sanchez put away her opponent 6-0, 6-3 and then Leyla Entekhabi pinned up a 6-3, 6-1 win. The battle at the No. 1 position was a tough one, but Arizona grabbed its lone point of the match when #60 Danielle Steinberg beat USC's #68 Lindsey Nelson after a hard-fought tiebreaker for a 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) decision.
USC's next match takes the Trojans to Tempe for a 1:30 p.m. clash with Arizona State on Saturday (Feb. 23).
