    Feb. 16, 2007

PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The No. 5 USC women's tennis team fell just short of upsetting defending Pac-10 and national champion Stanford on Friday afternoon in Palo Alto, ending up with a 5-2 loss to the No. 2 Cardinal for the Trojans' first defeat of the year. USC is now 5-1 overall on the season.

The day started out with Stanford taking the early upper hand by winning the doubles point. Stanford took the first step with a win at No. 3 by Logar/Deason over #23 Fansler/Matias, 8-3. USC pulled even with #15 DeVera/Fink's 8-4 win at No. 2 over Burdette/Nguyen, but Stanford grabbed the point with a win at No. 1 as Durkin/Yelsey topped USC's Nelson/Smekodub 8-6.

In singles play, USC got its wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, as Lindsey Nelson topped Stanford's #89 Teresa Logar 6-3, 6-4 at the top singles slot. #9 Sarah Fansler finished off Stanford's Anne Yelsey 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 to tie up the match 2-2 just after #13 Celia Durkin's 6-4, 6-2 victory over USC's Amanda Fink at the No. 3 spot. Stanford went ahead 3-2 with Whitney Deason's 7-5, 7-6 win over Anca Anastastiu, and then clinched the win with a hard-fought three-set battle at No. 4 between Jessica Nguyen and #46 Dianne Matias. Nguyen won the match for the Cardinal with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory, as the No. 6 singles match between USC's #95 Judy DeVera and #39 Lindsay Burdette raged on into a third set and eventually a tiebreaker. Stanford caught the advantage on that one, as Burdette won 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) to make it a 5-2 win for the Cardinal.

USC now turns to face #9 California in a 12 p.m. match at Cal on Saturday (Feb. 17).
