MALIBU, Calif. - The third-ranked USC women's tennis team defeated No. 34 Pepperdine 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. With the win the Women of Troy improve to 6-1, while the Waves fall to 5-3.
The Waves, who fell to UCLA on Friday, started the afternoon with a strong victory at No. 1 doubles when they upset USC's Jewel Peterson and Tiffany Brymer, 8-2. But the Trojans made up for the loss by winning at courts 2 and 3 to earn the doubles point and enter singles play ahead 1-0.
Both Peterson and Brymer bounced back in singles without a problem. Peterson easily defeated Pepperdine's Natalie Braverman, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 and Brymer followed with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over Veronica Koksova at No. 6.
Despite Pepperdine wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions, USC clinched the victory when Melissa Esmero downed Anna Andersson by scores of 6-1, 6-7 (0), 6-0 at No. 6.
The Women of Troy travel to Arizona this week to face the Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 21, and the Sun Devils on Saturday, Feb. 22.
