MADISON, WISC. -- The No. 7 USC women's tennis team went up against another top-5 opponent at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships today, and fell 4-1 to No. 5 Baylor in the Trojans' final match at the action in Madison, Wisc. USC goes to 6-2 overall with today's loss, having fallen to No. 1 Duke yesterday.
Baylor got ahead of the Trojans by snagging the doubles point with a win from the Bears' #13-ranked pair over USC's Kinstler/Sanchez at No. 1 followed by another Baylor win at No. 3 over Andrews/Pulido.
As singles got underway, the Bears stayed strong. Baylor responded with a pair of wins next to clinch things, however, as #18 Danielle Lao fell at No. 3 followed by a tough three-set loss for #8 Maria Sanchez at the No. 1 slot. It was Sanchez's first loss of the year in dual-match singles play after a pair of solid wins for Sanchez in the first two matches at the ITA Indoors. Baylor's #17 Lenka Brosova managed a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback over Sanchez to clinch the win for Baylor.
That left two matches still going, with the team splitting in the final matches. Baylor got a 6-4, 6-2 win over #37 Valeria Pulido at No. 4 before Cristala Andrews rounded out the action with a Trojan win at No. 6 as she topped Carla Lindlar 6-0, 6-1 for the junior's third win at the ITA Indoor competition, improving her singles win streak out to seven straight with her perfect 7-0 mark in dual-match singles play for the Women of Troy.
