Feb. 9, 2014
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -- The No. 6 USC women's tennis team went up against the top-seeded team in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships today, tangling with Florida in a consolation match today in Charlottesville, Va. The fifth-seeded Trojans captured the doubles point but were overwhelmed in singles by the Gators' lineup of six players ranked in the nation's top-40. USC goes to 4-2 overall with this week's win and two losses taken at the elite tournament that featured the nation's top teams.
After dropping the doubles point in the previous two matches, the Women of Troy buckled down and found their doubles groove in this one. #3 Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz pounded out a 6-2 win at court three to get the ball rolling, and although USC's #7 Olmos/Scandalis would fall on court two, #33 Trojans Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria were the heroes of the day in pulling off the clincher with a 7-5 decision on court one over #32 Oyen/Woodcock.
In singles, the Trojans were up against higher ranked opponents on courts two through six, while court one was a battle between the nation's #17 and #13 ranked players. The Gators would grab straight-set wins on courts six and two, while USC's #13 Sabrina Santamaria went to a 10-point tiebreak to decide the third, where Florida's #17 Olivia Janowicz pulled off the win to make it a 3-1 Gator advantage. The clincher would come on court two, where USC's #96 Brynn Boren had her hands full with Florida's #18 Breanna Morgan. Morgan pulled out the 7-5, 6-1 clincher to wrap the match as a 4-1 Florida victory.
USC now returns to California to set up for the match against UC Irvine on Friday (Feb. 15). That clash will take place at the Laguna Niguel Racquet Club at 11 a.m.
