No. 6 USC Women Trip Up At ITA National Team Indoors To UCLA|
Feb. 8, 2014
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -- Crosstown rivals USC and UCLA wound up crossing paths early and far from home today when the two women's tennis teams clashed in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. No. 5 seeded USC went up against No. 4 seeded UCLA for the right to take a place in tomorrow's semifinals, but the Bruins would hand the Trojans their first loss of the year with a 4-0 decision. USC will now go on to face Florida tomorrow in a consolation match at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Doubles action went absolutely down to the wire, with UCLA's top-ranked team of Anderson/Brady getting the first win of the day in beating USC's #33 Christian/Santamaria. USC evened the score on #3 Boren/Katz's 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot to put the decider on court two. There, USC's #7 Olmos/Scandalis and UCLA's Harrison/McPhillips would battle out into a tiebreaker, where the Bruins snagged the first point of the match in clinching with a 7-6 (9-7) decision.
The Trojans had fought back from dropping the doubles point to Alabama the previous day, clawing out of a 1-3 hole in that one. But today a comeback was not in the cards for USC. The Bruins would grab straight-set wins on courts four, one and six, respectively, to get the win. The higher-seeded Bruins score their first two victories when #36 Kyle McPhillips topped USC"s #60 Giuliana Olmos and then top-ranked Robin Anderson held her ground for a win over USC's #13 Sabrina Santamaria. The clincher would come on court six - where USC's Ellie Yates had been the hero yesterday with the winning match vs. the Crimson Tide. UCLA's Kaitlyn Ray managed the win today, however, and UCLA had the 4-0 win in hand to steal away a spot in the semifinals.
