Tennis Completes Tourney With Loss To Kentucky, 6-1|
Feb. 7, 2004
MADISON, Wisc. - The fifth-ranked USC women's tennis team was not able to get back on track, completing the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship with a 6-1 loss to 15th-ranked Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the A.C. Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc. The Women of Troy, who advanced to the semifinals last season, finished 0-3 this year at the national competition and fall to 4-3 on the season.
The Wildcats go 1-2 for the tournament and improve to 7-3 this season.
USC was again forced to play without 26th-ranked Luana Magnani in singles, but this time she also had to withdraw from doubles play at the top of the lineup. Her absence forced the pairings to be reworked and the singles lineup to be moved up a spot.
Kentucky garnered wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to earn the first point of the afternoon. USC did grab a win at No. 2, as seniors Bernadette Bayani and Melissa Esmero defeated Kentucky's Lara Maurer and Kim Coventry in a tiebreaker, 9-8(5).
Sophomore Carine Vermeulen was the first to fall in singles as she was defeated by 23rd-ranked Aibaka Kalsarieva, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot to give UK a 2-0 lead. USC freshman Dianne Matias followed with a loss to Joelle Schwenk, 6-1, 6-4, at court three.
Bayani was the highlight of the match for the Women of Troy by going 2-0 with her win in doubles and at No. 5 singles. She defeated Kentucky's Coventry, 6-4, 6-3, to give USC its only point of the outing.
The Wildcats' Liis Sober eventually clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Erica Sauer at No. 6.
