Los Angeles, Calif. -- The 10th-ranked USC (4-1, 1-1 Pac-10) women's tennis team swept nonconference opponent Loyola Marymount (1-1), 8-0, this afternoon (Feb. 1) at the intramural tennis courts on the USC campus.
Senior Kara Warkentin, who moved up to the No. 1 position for today's match, defeated LMU freshman Jennifer Mitchell, 6-3, 6-3. USC's Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg also entered today's lineup at the No. 6 spot. The sophomore earned a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Angelina Zsodorovitska. Fourth-ranked Jewel Peterson and freshman Tiffany Brymer did not compete this afternoon. The Trojans won all six singles matches in two sets, holding a 6-0 lead heading into doubles play.
In doubles, the duo of Warkentin and Veronika Safarova posted an 8-5 win over Penka Fileva and Edit Pakay, while Anita Loyola and Jacqui Boyd survived a difficult match against Mitchell and Freudenberg for a 9-8 victory to complete the match. The final doubles match was never played after USC's Caroline Christian withdrew due to health reasons.
The Women of Troy do not return to their home court until Thursday, Feb. 10, against Pepperdine. This weekend, Peterson will represent USC at the ITA Individual Championships (Feb. 3-6), in Dallas, Tex.
