LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 9 USC women's tennis team secured a place in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a decisive 4-0 win over No. 35 Auburn tonight at Marks Stadium. Playing in the title match of the ITA Kick-off Weekend, the Women of Troy snagged the doubles point before pounding out a string of 6-0 starts in singles en route to the win over the visiting Tigers. In the consolation match preceding the final, San Diego beat LSU 4-1 USC's win over Auburn pulls the Trojans to 4-0 on the season.
Doubles action wrapped up in a tight window, with the point decided in USC's just seconds after Auburn pulled out a win at No. 3. USC's Danielle Lao / Alison Ramos won the last three games to tack up an 8-4 win at the No. 2 position to get the Trojans an early leg up. At No. 3, Auburn's Kurteva/Schippers topped Cristala Andrews / Valeria Pulido 8-4, but it was only tied up for a moment, as USC's top pair Lyndsay Kinstler / Maria Sanchez pounded out an 8-3 win with one last break to secure the doubles point for USC.
Four different Women of Troy opened up their respective singles matches with shutouts in the first set. #28 Alison Ramos was the first to cruise through to victory, taking USC ahead 2-0 by giving up just a single game in her 6-0, 6-1 win over Mrythe Molenveld at the No. 2 position. Leyla Entekhabi broke through next at No. 5, delivering a similarly dominant win over Paulina Schippers 6-0, 6-1. Maria Sanchez and Valeria Pulido both were neck-and-neck in their move toward closing things down, with Danielle Lao and Cristala Andrews also nearing victory. Pulido claimed the clincher first, scoring a 6-0, 6-4 victory after trailing 1-4 in the second set to Daniela Vukadinovic, leaving the remaining matches suspended with those Trojans poised for victory.
USC's next competition puts the Women of Troy up against Pepperdine in a 1:30 p.m. match on Thursday (Feb. 4) t Marks Stadium.
