No. 8 Michigan Manages 5-2 Win Over No. 18 USC|
Jan. 30, 2011
ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The No. 18 USC women's tennis team put up a big fight against host No. 8 Michigan in today's ITA Kick-Off Weekend finale, but the Trojans were passed up by the Wolverines to take a 5-2 loss. The Women of Troy go to 3-1 overall with the loss.
USC opened the match with a gutsy performance in doubles. After the Wolverines got the win on court two, USC's #80 Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez pinned up an 8-4 win at the No. 1 slot. With the doubles point hanging in the balance on court three, USC's Cristala Andrews and Alison Ramos dug themselves out of a 4-7 hole. The Trojan duo battled back into the match by winning four straight games, and the match would push into a tiebreaker. There, Andrews/Ramos would stave off two match points before jumping ahead and stealing the match and the doubles point for USC with a 9-8 (7) win.
The Trojans grabbed another point during singles on #3 Mari Sanchez' 6-0, 6-2 win over #11 Denise Muresan at the No. 1 position. But the Wolverines had managed straight-set wins over Alison Ramos, Cristala Andrews and Lyndsay Kinstler. Michigan was up 3-2 with three-setters raging on courts two and four. #114 Kaitlyn Christian had forced her way into a third against Mimi Nguyen, but her comeback efforts fell short as Nguyen was able to edge out the USC freshman with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win that wrapped up the vitory for the Wolverines. Meanwhile, on court two, USC's #10 Danielle Lao was playing out her third set against #105 Sam Critser. Critser caught a late spark, however, and got ahead of the Trojan to finish the match with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Lao.
The USC women now return home, with their next competition coming on Feb. 8 against San Diego State to start a stretch of three matches at Marks Stadium.
