The Trojans snagged the first win of the day as USC's Rianna Valdes and Madison Westby beat the No. 45 Wave duo of Gulbe/Milovanovic 6-1. On court two, USC's Jessica Failla and Zoë Katz were defeated by Pepperdine's No. 8 Runglerdkriangkrai/Stefani 6-2. After being down throughout the set, the No. 4 Trojan pair of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith fought back against Pepperdine's No. 18 Cutura/Maddox to even out the set score at 5-5. Unfortunately, the Waves made the final push and closed out the set with a score of 7-5 to collect the doubles point.

The Women of Troy entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 deficit. USC started out strong as No. 48 Rianna Valdes blasted through her match and beat Pepperdine's Christine Maddox with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 score. On court five, Zoë Katz was locked in a close battle with Pepperdine's Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai who took the first set 7-5. Runglerdkriangkrai then ran away with the second set with a 6-1 score to increase Pepperdine's lead to 2-1 overall. After defeating the Waves during her doubles match, No. 49 Madison Westby was ready to have her momentum roll over into singles. She powered through her match against Pepperdine's No. 102 Laura Gulbe and won 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match up at 2-2.

On court three, USC's Gabby Smith would be the next to claim a point for the Trojans as she defeated Pepperdine's Matea Cutura 6-3, 6-3. As the Trojans took the lead, battles were still being fought on courts one and four. After falling quickly to Pepperdine's No. 96 Dzina Milovanovic 6-2 in the first set, USC's No. 76 Jessica Failla fought back in true Trojan form in the second set. Games were exchanged between the two, but Pepperdine came out on top securing a close 7-6 (1) win in the second set. With the score tied at 3-3, the match rested on the outcome of the matchup between USC's No. 42 Giuliana Olmos and Pepperdine's No. 14 Luisa Stefani. After falling behind in the first set, Olmos powered her way back to win with a 6-4 score. This lit the fire underneath Stefani who took the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Waves.

USC continues its weekend of competition by hosting No. 47 Saint Mary's tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 30) at 12 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
