No. 16 USC Women Punch Ticket To ITA Indoors|
Jan. 29, 2012
TEMPE, ARIZ. -- After missing a trip last year, the No. 16 USC women's tennis team is back in the mix for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships thanks to a powerful run at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Tempe, Ariz., this weekend. The Women of Troy made a statement today with a solid 6-1 win over No. 20 host Arizona State to win the weekend's action and secure that spot in the ITA's top team tournament next month. Freshman Gabriella DeSimone was the winner on the day as she came through with the clincher from her No. 5 singles spot to help USC to a 4-0 lead on the Sun Devils. USC improves to 3-0 overall with today's win.
In doubles action, USC jumped all over the Sun Devils with two fairly quick wins -- identical 8-2 decisions -- at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup. Valeria Pulido and Zoe Scandalis got the job done first on court three, and then Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos secured the first point with a win on court two to bring up singles play. The momentum of that doubles domination helped the Trojans mount another surge in singles, rattling off five straight wins to put ASU well out of reach. #18 Sabrina Santamaria was the first to wrap up her Sun Devil opponent, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hannah James at the No. 3 spot to make it 2-0 Trojans. Alison Ramos came through next with a decisive 7-5, 6-3 win over Leighann Sahagun from court six, and USC was off to the races. DeSimone dealt the winning blow with her 7-5, 6-4 win over Joanna Smith, prompting ASU's Michelle Brycki to retire from her No. 2 match against #42 Danielle Lao, with Lao leading in that one 6-4, 2-6, 2-1. Meanwhile, #99 Kaitlyn Christian was pushing past Sianna Simmons on court four with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win to bring it to a 6-0 USC advantage. The match of the day at the No. 1 position had ASU's #9 Jacqueline Cako and USC's #19 Zoe Scandalis embroiled in battle that wound up decided in a 10-game tiebreaker. Cako managed the win in the late decider for a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) over Scandalis to tally ASU's lone point of the match.
The Women of Troy now set up for two home matches next week, hosting St. Mary's at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 2) before facing Pepperdine at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 4) at Marks Stadium.
