Jan. 28, 2004
LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked USC women's tennis team defeated UC Irvine, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 28, at Marks Stadium. This was the season-opening match for the visiting Anteaters who start their season 0-1, while the Women of Troy improve to 3-0.
USC allowed only four points to be scored against them in all three doubles matches. Melissa Esmero and Judy DeVera blanked their opponent, 8-0, while the 42nd-ranked duo of Luana Magnani and Carine Vermeulen, and the tandem of Anca Anastasiu and Dianne Matias captured 8-1 and 8-3 victories of their own, respectively.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles, the Women of Troy were quick to secure the match with victories at courts six, two and three, in that order. The Anteaters were held to only five points in these deciding matches.
DeVera, Matias and Magnani completed the Trojan sweep with two-set wins at No. 5, 4 and 1. Magnani got past the efforts of UCI's Tiffany Chang at center court, 7-5, 6-3, to complete the match.
USC returns to the court this Friday, Jan. 30, for a 1:30 p.m. match against crosstown rival UCLA. The Lexus Gauntlet match-up will be the first of two in women's tennis this season.
