No. 9 USC Women Snag 6-1 Win Over UC Irvine|
Jan. 25, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 9 USC women's tennis team rolled out to another win in the early goings of 2010 dual-match play today, pinning up a 6-1 victory over visiting No. 57 UC Irvine at Marks Stadium. Last week's rains washed out the first chance at a Trojan-Anteater clash, but today's skies stayed clear for the Women of Troy to get control of their second win of the season. USC grabbed a pair of doubles wins and then five straight singles victories to power past UC Irvine and move the Trojans to 2-0 on the year.
Freshman Danielle Lao and sophomore Alison Ramos teamed up for USC's first win of the day in resounding 8-2 win at the No. 3 slot in doubles play. The two would go their separate ways for singles action, and both snagged decisive wins to help continue USC's push to victory. Ramos tacked up USC's first singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over April Basharat at the No. 2 singles spot, and Lao clinched the win for the Trojans on her 6-3, 6-2 win over Brooke Bartlett at No. 2.
The nation's No. 8 singles player, Maria Sanchez, also had a winning day as she teamed up with Lyndsay Kinstler in doubles and clinched that point for the Trojans with their 8-6 win at the No. 1 position. Sanchez would go on and take down UC Irvine's No. 103 Stephanie Hammel 6-0, 6-4 at the top slot in singles. The Anteaters managed a late doubles win after the point had already been decided in USC's favor, as Anteaters Holladay/Kwan edged out USC's Cristala Andrews / Valeria Pulido in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (1). Andrews and Pulido had the last word in singles play, however. Pulido powered her way past Courtney Byron 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position to get USC up 3-0 in the match and set up Lao for her match-clinching win. Andrews, meanwhile, recovered from a second-set loss to pound out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Becka Kwan to make it a 6-0 USC lead in the match. The Anteaters' lone point came at the No. 6 singles slot in three-setter won by Kristina Smith over USC's Kinstler, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
USC now turns to host more action at Marks Stadium with this week's ITA Kick-Off Weekend. LSU, Auburn and San Diego come to town this week for competition leading up to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February. On Friday (Jan. 29), Auburn and LSU play first in a 10 a.m. match followed by a 2 p.m. clash between USC and San Diego. The consolation match is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 30), with the championship after that at 5:30 p.m.
