Jan. 25, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The fifth-ranked USC women's tennis team pocketed its third straight win of 2006 with a 7-0 victory over visiting No. 64 San Diego on Wednesday at Marks Stadium. The Trojans dropped one match at No. 1 doubles but swept the rest of the matches to nail down the 7-0 decision.
Playing at the No. 1 singles slot, Lindsey Nelson fought through a tight first set to plow through the second set for a 7-6, 6-1 win over Emma Murphy. Meanwhile, Luana Magnani was forging her own battle at No. 4 singles. The USC senior dug her way out of a first-set loss to claim her match 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 and keep the Women of Troy undefeated in singles play on the day. The rest of the Trojans powered through their respective matches with straight-set wins, led by respective No. 5 and No. 6 singles players, Carine Vermeulen and Anca Anastasiu's identical 6-0, 6-0 sweeps to kick things off. Dianne Matias was the next to lock down a singles victory at the No. 3 position with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lauren Perl, and freshman No. 2 player Amanda Fink downed her San Diego opponent, Jennifer Brown, 6-3, 6-1.
In the match's opening doubles play, the USC duo of Matias and Anastasiu as well as USC's Fink/Vermeulen tandem, pinned up 8-1 scores over their respective Torero foes to tally the Trojans' first point of the match. Nelson/Magnani were passed up by USD's Murphy/Perl by an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles, but the point already belonged to the Women of Troy.
The Women of Troy next travel to the National Team Indoors in Wisconsin for the competition running Feb. 2-5.
