Jan. 24, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 9 USC women's tennis team had its initial look at No. 50 Long Beach State washed away earlier in the week with rains, but Sunday's clear skies meant the Women of Troy were able to get in their first dual match of the year. USC hosted the 49ers at Marks Stadium and pinned up a 6-1 win to open the season with a 1-0 start.
The Trojans kicked off the match by snagging three wins in doubles action. Senior/freshman tandem of Sarah Fansler / Valeria Pulido teamed up at No. 2 to the tune of an 8-0 shutout, and freshman Danielle Lao played with sophomore Alison Ramos at No. 3 for a similarly dominating 8-1 win. Meanwhile, USC juniors Lyndsay Kinstler / Maria Sanchez tallied a tight 9-8 (6) upset win over Long Beach State's No. 58-ranked Alawi/Manasse pair to round out doubles play.
In singles action, four Trojans struck through straight-set victories over their 49er opponents. The nation's No. 8 player, Maria Sanchez, posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Deborah Armstrong at the No. 1 slot, while No. 37 freshman Valeria Pulido grabbed a 6-3, 6-0 win playing at No. 4 in her first USC dual match. Juniors Cristala Andrews and Lyndsay Kinstler worked it at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively, as Andrews cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 win in her spot and Kinstler topped Jeczimionka 6-2, 6-4. USC's No. 39 Alison Ramos outlasted her 49er foe in a three-setter, notching a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win for USC's sixth point in the match. Fansler was stuck with USC's lone loss in the match, as LBSU's Anais Dallara managed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Fansler.
USC now turns for another make-up on an early-season rainout, as the Women of Troy host UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m. on Monday (Jan. 25) at Marks Stadium.
