Jan. 22, 2004
LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked USC women's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2004 season on Thursday afternoon by defeating Long Beach State, 7-0, at Marks Tennis Stadium. The match was also the season opener for Long Beach State (0-1).
Even without 24th-ranked junior Luana Magnani in the lineup (inj.), the Women of Troy had little trouble throughout the afternoon. USC had only one match pushed to extra sets.
USC won all three doubles matches for the first point of the match. Senior Bernadette Bayani maintained the momentum heading into singles by finishing first with a 6-3, 6-0 win over 49er Claudia Argumedo at No. 6. Bayani was followed by freshman Dianne Matias at No. 3 and fellow senior Melissa Esmero, who beat LBSU's Alanah Carroll, 6-4, 6-2, for the Trojans' clinching fourth point at No. 5.
Freshman Anca Anastasiu, who recently joined the team, was the last one on the court for the Women of Troy as she fought back from a first-set loss to defeat Long Beach State's Lindsey Marvel, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, at court two.
USC returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 23, for a 1:30 p.m. match against TCU.
