Los Angeles, CA -- 10th-ranked USC (2-0) improved to 2-0 by defeating UC Irvine in the second match of the season. The Women of Troy earned the 7-2 victory on Thursday, Jan. 20, at Marks Tennis Stadium.

Fourth-ranked freshman Jewel Peterson played her first match of the season against the Anteaters, but suffered a startling loss UC Irvine's Maureen Diaz, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. This was the Trojans' only loss in singles play. At No. 2 and 3, seniors Kara Warkentin and Jacqui Boyd earned wins over Darian Chappell, 6-3, 6-1, and Jonni Seymour, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. Freshmen Anita Loyola and Tiffany Brymer, and sophomore Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg, each claimed victories in the No. 4-6 spots.

USC posted two wins in doubles play, including a 8-1 victory as Warkentin and Brymer defeated Chappell and Seymour. Loyola and Safarova dropped the No. 2 match to Maureen Diaz and Natalie Exon, 8-5, and Boyd and Peterson claimed a win against Nickole Kabe and Liz Yim, 8-4.

The Trojans will play their first Pac-10 match on Thursday, Jan. 28, at Arizona State. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (MT).
