Jan. 20, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 16 USC women's tennis team pinned up a powerful season-opening statement with a 7-0 sweep of visiting No. 57 UC Irvine today at Marks Stadium. Anchored by a winning run through doubles play, the Women of Troy rattled off six decisive singles wins. The clincher came from freshman Gabriella DeSimone -- one of three freshmen in the lineup -- who rattled off a 6-1, 6-1 win from her No. 5 position to ensure a 1-0 start to the year for the USC women.
USC jumped out to leads on all three doubles courts to start the day. Playing on court three, Valeria Pulido and Zoe Scandalis gunned it past UC Irvine's Facey/Goettsching, pinning up an 8-2 win for the Trojans' first victory of the day. Securing the doubles point for USC was a veteran pairing of Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos, who fended off theAnteaters Hammel/Smith's attempt to cut in at a 5-3 advantage by peeling ahead on service holds from each for an 8-3 decision on court two. Meanwhile, on court one, USC's #3 ranked Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria saw their Anteater opponents Byron/Holladay tug to within 6-5 late in the match before regrouping with a winning surge. Santamaria topped off the win with a sneaky crosscourt shot that capped an 8-5 win for the Women of Troy to bring up singles action.
Freshman Zoe Scandalis rode the wave of her winning run through last week's Freeman Memorial to a shutout of UC Irvine's Courtney Byron with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court one to make it a 2-0 USC lead in the match. Her fellow freshman Sabrina Santamaria followed suit with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Franziska Goettsching at the No. 3 singles slot. That's when DeSimone stepped in a completed the freshman sweep, notching USC's fourth point of the match for the clincher to put the Trojans up 4-0. The USC youth flexed its muscle further with sophomore Kaitlyn Christian's 6-0, 6-3 win over Kat Facey on court four to make it 5-0, and then junior Danielle Lao -- fresh off winning the singles crown at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic last week -- tacked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kristina Smith on court two. Wrapping up the day's competition was senior Alison Ramos on court six. Ramos took down Brooke Schweyer with a 6-2, 6-4 decision to tie up the shutout win of the Anteaters for the Women of Troy.
The USC women return to action next week with a trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Trojans open up the two-day precursor to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships against Sacramento State at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 28). USC will face either Arizona State or Texas Tech the following day.
