LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The fifth-ranked USC women's tennis team got a 2-0 start to the 2006 dual-meet season with a 6-1 win over visiting No. 57 Long Beach State at Mark Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Women of Troy out-dueled the 49ers in doubles action to notch the first point in the dual match, then tacked up the first four singles wins to get the win over Long Beach State (0-1).
At No. 1 singles, USC sophomore Lindsey Nelson fell behind and dropped the first set before battling back to tie up the match with an 8-6 tiebreaking battle in the second set. With the dual match already decided, the final set was to be played as a 10-point tiebreaker, which Nelson took control of and won 10-5 to claim the win over Long Beach State's tough Hannah Grady at No. 1 singles.
USC freshman Amanda Fink tallied the first singles win in a 6-2, 6-0 dispatch of Katy Williams, followed by Trojan senior Carine Vermeulen's 6-4, 7-5 win over Sandra Rocha at No. 4 singles. USC's Dianne Matias would clinch the match victory for the Women of Troy with her 6-4, 6-0 decision over Stephanie Bengson at the No. 3 singles position. At No. 5, Anca Anastasiu downed Jessica Weeks 7-6, 6-3 before Long Beach State managed a singles victory at the No. 6 position.
