USC Women Are Strong In Early Spring Action|
Jan. 19, 2010
Before the rains came, the USC women's tennis team got in some important tournament action as a tune-up for the Trojans' coming dual match play. Several Women of Troy competed at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic over the weekend, with Maria Sanchez making a move to the title match in singles and joining teammate Lyndsay Kinstler in the doubles semifinals. Fellow Trojans Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos also claimed a spot in the doubles semis at the NCTC. Meanwhile, at UNLV's Freeman Memorial, Las Vegas native Cristala Andrews worked her way to the consolation singles final of that tourney.
Maria Sanchez had been a singles semifinalist as last year's NCTC, going one better this season as the tournament's No. 2 seed. She and Alison Ramos both barreled their ways into a semifinal slot this year. Sixth-seeded Ramos followed up a Round of 16 win with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 upset of No. 3 seed Maria Mosolova of Northwestern in the quarterfinals. Sanchez put away UCLA's No. 7 seed Andrea Remynse with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 comeback in the quarters to set up her semifinal appearance. Ramos was up against No. 4 seed Hillary Barte of Stanford in semifinal action, falling 6-0, 6-3 while Sanchez topped Stanford's No. 8 seed Lindsay Burdette 6-3, 6-3 to earn a place against Barte in the final. Barte would get the title, however, pulling out a tight first set to claim a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Sanchez in the championship match.
USC filled up two semifinal slots on the doubles side as well, but missed a shot at the final. Kinstler/Sanchez fell 8-3 to Stanford's Barte/Burdette, and Lao/Ramos fell by the same score to UCLA's Remynse/Schnack.
In competition in Las Vegas, freshman Valeria Pulido got an opening win in singles play while Leyla Entekhabi and Cristala Andrews took a loss to move into consolation action. Entekhabi would reach the consolation quarters, while Andrews snagged a three-setter in the semis to push to the final. There, Andrews was edged in three by UNC's Sinann Featherston 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
The USC women now set up for dual match play beginning this week at Marks Stadium. USC will host Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 21) and then hosts UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 22).
