LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The fifth-ranked USC women's tennis team opened 2006 with a decisive 7-0 win over No. 68 UC Irvine at Marks Stadium on Thursday. The Women of Troy teamed up for a solid start with a sweep in doubles, led by the freshman-senior tandem of Amanda Fink and Carine Vermeulen at No. 2 doubles, who posted an 8-2 win to get things rolling in USC's victory. It was the first dual match of the year for both squads, putting USC at 1-0, and UC Irvine at 0-1.
In singles action, Lindsey Nelson took control of her No. 1 singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bela Mijic. Anca Anastasiu was next to down her Anteaters opponent with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ali Borowicz at the No. 6 position, and then #69 Luana Magnani tacked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Clare Fermin in No. 4 singles to lock away the team win.
USC next faces #57 Long Beach State tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
