USC Women Fight On In Spring Tournament Play|
Jan. 16, 2015
USC women's tennis divided and conquered on the first day of individual action out at two separate tournaments today as every Trojan opened up with a singles victory. Out at the Freeman Memorial in Las Vegas, USC had three players win Round of 16 matches today and both doubles teams have advanced as well. At the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, USC senior Gabriella DeSimone won her first two singles matches of the event, and picked up a doubles with with teammate Zoë Katz to move on in that realm, too.
At the Freeman Memorial, USC freshmen Gabby Smith and Madison Westby both snagged opening wins in singles, as did junior Giuliana Olmos. Senior Zoë Scandalis was a winner in her opening singles match, but fell in a three-set battle in the Round of 16 to a tough opponent from UNC. She'd pair up powerfully with Olmos for doubles play as the No. 2 seeded pair in the draw, and the experience duo tacked up a first-round win to move on. So, too, did the freshman pairing of Smith and Westby, who topped their UNC opponents 6-1 to advance.
Back in Palm Springs, Trojans DeSimone, Katz and freshman Meredith Xepoleas all pinned up straight-set victories in their first-round singles bouts. Xepoleas would fall in a three-setter next, and Katz also stumbled in her second-round test. DeSimone would prevail in hers with a three-set victory over her opponent from Pepperdine to punch a ticket to tomorrow's singles play. The senior will have another busy day, as she and Katz proved strong in doubles action, beating their opponents from Texas A&M to click through to the next round.
