Big Wins For Women of Troy At Freeman Memorial|
Jan. 13, 2012
The USC women's tennis team flexed some powerful doubles muscle today in Las Vegas, highlighted by Valeria Pulido and Zoë Scandalis' dominating upset of the top-ranked team in the nation. In the first round of doubles play out at the Freeman Memorial, Pulido/Scandalis delivered an 8-3 victory over Stanford's Burdette/Gibbs. At the other end of the draw, USC's No. 3-ranked Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria worked past their Duke foes to make their first moves of the spring.
On the singles side of the game, freshmen Santamaria and Scandalis both picked up a pair of wins to push into tomorrow's quarterfinals. Santamaria topped her winning day with a three-set win over UCLA's McCall Jones, while Scandalis also pulled out a three-setter to top Duke's Mary Clayton. Christian also had opened the day with a singles win in the Round of 32, sweeping past UNC's Gina Suarez-Malaguti before coming up against UCLA's No. 2 seeded Robin Anderson -- ranked #8 in the nation -- in the Round of 16. Christian would fall to Anderson, leaving the USC freshmen as the Trojan quarterfinalists for tomorrow.
Doubles quarterfinals for Christian/Santamaria and Pulido/Scandalis come up tomorrow morning.
