THIS SEASON: Maria Sanchez enters her third season at USC ranked No. 17 in the ITA preseason singles rankings and No. 47 in doubles with Valeria Pulido.
2009: Sanchez finished her junior season ranked No. 26 in the ITA singles rankings... In doubles, finished ranked No. 49 with Gabriela Niculescu and No. 75 with Alison Ramos... Named to All-Pac-10 Second Team and earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships, falling in the first round... Was hampered by a rib injury that kept her out of several dual matches during the regular season and also the Pac-10 Tournament, but still went 24-11 overall in singles play... Went 10-7 in dual match singles, going 7-5 at No. 1 and 3-2 at No. 2... Named Pac-10 Player of the Week for the first time on April 13 after returning from injury for wins in Arizona... Reached the singles semifinals at the National Collegiate in January... In doubles, was 25-9 overall including a 13-5 record in dual match play with Ramos at the No. 2 (4-5) and No. 3 (9-0) positions... Ranked No. 22 in the ITA preseason singles rankings and No. 23 in doubles with Niculescu and No. 53 with Ramos... During the fall, went 10-1 in singles and 9-2 in doubles... Lost her first singles match at the Riviera/ITA All-American Qualifying, but won the next 10 to claim the Riviera/ITA All-American Qualifying Consolation Final and then win the ITA Regional Singles Championship... In doubles, went 5-0 with Niculescu to win the ITA Regionals Doubles Championship... Also went 4-2 with Ramos to reach the Riviera/ITA All-American Qualifying Consolation quarterfinals.
2008: Sanchez went 27-11 overall in singles, and was 18-6 in dual match play... Was 5-2 at the No. 4 position and 13-4 at No. 5... Went 6-1 in Pac-10 dual matches... Played in the Pac-10 Singles Round of 32... In doubles, was 18-14 overall and 13-10 in dual matches, going 8-9 with Lindsey Nelson at the No. 1 (1-0) and No. 2 (4-7) position and going 10-5 with Cristala Andrews including play at the No. 2 (0-1) and No. 3 (8-2) dual match positions... Finished the season ranked No. 96 in singles... Went 8-3 in singles and 3-1 in doubles during the fall... Posted a 5-1 record at the ITA West Regional, reaching the consolation semifinals... Went undefeated at the Duals in the Desert... Played doubles with Lindsey Nelson during the fall.
HIGH SCHOOL: Sanchez is a 2007 graduate of Davis High... Considered the top California recruit and ranked No. 5 nationally... Named the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Modesto Bee District Tennis MVP... Awarded Stanislaus County Female High School Athlete of the Year in 2006... Was 16s Hard Courts doubles champion and 16s Winter Nationals singles champion... Ranked No. 1 in U.S. 16s and No. 4 in 18s in 2006.
PERSONAL: Maria Victoria Sanchez was born on Nov. 26, 1989 in Castro Valley, Calif... Daughter of Luis and Catherine Sanchez... Has four brothers, Daniel, Kevin, Andrew and Ian... Lists Greek as her favorite food and `Desperate Housewives' as her favorite TV show... Would like to visit Italy, France and London... After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in business...
