1999: Safarova showed great improvement for the second straight year, posting a 22-13 overall record as a 1999 junior ... She was named to the 1999 Pac-10 All-Academic second team... She went 17-10 in duals and played No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 ... She mostly saw time at the No. 4 position and was 9-5 ... She reached the final of the Pac-10 Invitational Tournament before losing to Jen Heiser of Stanford ... She was No. 59 in the preseason rankings ... Veronika also had a good year in doubles, as she and Karolina Bakalarova ended the year ranked No. 38 in doubles ... Safarova went 17-7 overall in doubles and 15-4 in dual matches ... She and Bakalarova went 16-6 overall and 14-4 in duals, nearly all at the No. 2 spot ...
1998: Safarova followed up an impressive freshman year with another good season as a sophomore, and was a 1998 Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention selection... She was 19-17 overall (14-11 in dual matches) ... She mostly saw time at the No. 2 singles position (10-7) ... She finished at No. 80 in the singles rankings ... Veronika lost in the first round of the NCAA Championships to Zsofia Csapo of Pepperdine ... In doubles, Safarova was 14-11 overall and teamed with Kara Warkentin (7-5), Karolina Bakalarova (7-5) and Jacqui Boyd (0-1) ... She was tied at No. 66 in the preseason singles rankings...
1997: Safarova had a solid freshman campaign in 1997 with a singles record of 11-10 ... Her final ranking was tied for No. 79... She showed her versatility by playing anywhere from Nos. 2-6 on the singles ladder... She teamed with Karolina Bakalarova in doubles, going 3-6, and was 3-8 overall... A stress fracture in a foot halted her campaign at the end of the regular season...
PREP EXPERIENCE: She won the Czech Republic junior national championship in 1993... She was ranked among the top 10 juniors in the Czech Republic and played on a junior national team that competed all over Europe... She played against former USC teammate Karolina Bakalarova on club teams...
PERSONAL: Veronika Safarova was born on August 23, 1977 in Nove Mesto Na Morave, Czech Republic... She is the daughter of Jana and Milan Safarova... She is a business major at USC.
