USC Advances To NCAA Round Of 16 After Win Over Vanderbilt

THIS SEASON: Valeria Pulido enters her third season at USC... Won a bronze medal at the 2011 World University Games in the summer playing for Mexico with teammate Leticia Nazari Urbina.
2011: Pulido finished 2011 ranked No. 28 in the nation in ITA doubles with Alison Ramos... Sidelined for part of the season with an ankle injury... Appeared in the NCAA First Round of doubles with Ramos... Was 12-9 overall in singles, going 8-6 in dual matches... Split time between the No. 4 position (3-4) and No. 5 (5-2)... Went 19-11 overall in doubles, going 6-7 in dual matches... Was 18-10 overall with Ramos, going 5-6 in dual matches with a 3-2 mark at No. 1 and 2-4 at No. 2... Also went 1-1 with Lyndsay Kinstler at the No. 2 position... Pulido entered the spring ranked No. 11 in doubles with Ramos... In the fall, Pulido was ranked No. 74 in the nation in singles... Went 2-2 in fall singles, competing in ITA/Riviera All-American qualifying and reaching the ITA Southwest Regional Round of 16... In fall doubles, went 12-2 with Ramos, working through prequalifying and qualifying to reach the ITA/Riviera All-American quarterfinals and winning the ITA Southwest Regional Doubles Championship... Also reached the USTA/ITA National Indoor doubles quarterfinals.
2010: Pulido finished her freshman season ranked No. 112 in the nation in singles and No. 69 in doubles with Maria Sanchez... Went 28-10 overall in singles, including an 18-5 mark in dual-match play... Played at the No. 3 (1-0), No. 4 (16-5) and No. 5 (1-0) positions... Went 7-1 in Pac-10 dual matches... Played in the Pac-10 Singles Championships first round... In doubles, went 19-6 overall, going 12-11 in dual matches... With 6-4 overall with Sanchez, going 2-2 at the No. 1 position... Went 5-4 at No. 2 with Alison Ramos and 4-3 at No. 3 with Cristala Andrews... Also paired with Sarah Fansler (1-1) and Lyndsay Kinstler (1-1) during the season... Entered the spring ranked No. 37 in the nation in ITA singles and No. 19 in doubles with Sanchez... During the fall, went 9-2 in singles competing at the Cal Nike Invite and ITA Regionals and winning out at the Duals in the Desert... In fall doubles, went 6-4 playing with Cristala Andrews and Lyndsay Kinstler and reaching the ITA Regionals quarterfinals with Sanchez.
HIGH SCHOOL: Marsico attended Preparatoria Nueva Opción in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico... Won the Group A doubles championship at the Casablanca Cup... Also was a semifinalist in singles at the Cup... A two-time tournament singles champion with wins in 2007 and 2008... Competed at the Fed Cup and at the Central American Games... Held WTA Tour rankings as high as No. 418 in singles and No. 341 in doubles in 2008... In 2005, finished as a singles finalist at the ITA/Morelia 2-MEX and won the tournament title in doubles.
PERSONAL: Valeria Pulido was born Jan. 1, 1990 in Jojutla, Morelos, Mexico... Daughter of Victoria Velasco and Jesús Pulido... Has one sister, Victoria, who played tennis at Miami-Ohio... Favorite sports moment was winning her first match outside Mexico at the 2000 Orange Bowl... Enjoys listening to music, going to dinner and movies with friends and reading in her free time... Lists Roger Federer as her biggest sports hero... Has always wanted to go on a backpacking trip in Europe... Would like to play professionally after graduation... Is majoring in sociology and minoring in psychology.
