Lefert Wins Second Medal On French Relay
July 31, 2012
Former Trojan All-American Clement Lefert secured his second medal of the 2012 London Olympics with a silver earned as part of France's 800m freestyle relay on Tuesday (July 31).
Lefert, who won a gold medal Sunday as a member of the French quartet that won the 400m free relay, swam the third leg Tuesday in the distance relay, moving France from fourth to second place heading into the anchor leg.
Also swimming in the race was Lefert's 2011 Trojan teammate and current junior Dimitri Colupaev, who swam the third leg of the race for Germany. Colupaev, second in the 200y free at the 2012 NCAA Championships, turned in a great relay split for Germany and moved his team from third to second halfway through the race. The Germans, however, ultimately finished fourth, passed by China over the final 200 meters
Lefert's medal gives USC 267 overall Olympic medals, including 124 gold, 80 silver and 63 bronze. Thus far, Troy has compiled one gold, two silvers and two bronze at the 2012 games.
Also in action Tuesday was recent great Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. Hosszu, a five-time NCAA champion at USC in her third Olympics, had a tough double on Tuesday, swimming in the semifinals of the 200m butterfly with the final of the 200m IM following some 30 minutes later.
Neither race went as well as Hosszu would have hoped. She finished ninth in the 200m fly in 2:07.69, 0.32 out of the eighth and final spot that qualified for the final. She was fourth in the first semifinal heat, but five swimmers bested her time in the second heat.
In the 200m IM final, Hosszu finished eighth in 2:14.19. She was fourth in the 400m IM earlier in the meet.
Hosszu will complete her four-event schedule Wednesday (Aug. 1) in the 800m freestyle relay. Joining her in that race will be Polish incoming freshman Katarzyna Wilk, who will also be competing in the 100m freestyle earlier in the day.
Also tomorrow, former USC NCAA champion Rebecca Soni will officially begin the quest to defend her 2008 Olympic title in the 200m breast with morning prelims and the evening's semifinals. Assuming she advances, the final of the event is Thursday night. She won silver in the 100m breast on Tuesday.
