    Stewart, Gardell Lead Big Opening Night At Texas Invitational

    Sophomore Kendyl Stewart (100y fly) and Stina Gardell (200y IM) posted wins, as did the women's 200y free relay, while senior Dimitri Colupaev (200y IM) and junior Cristian Quintero (500y free) posted second-place swims to lead a boatload of `A' cuts on the opening night of the 2013 Texas Invitational in Austin on Thursday (Dec. 5).

    USC started off the evening session with fireworks by lowering the less-than-a-year-old school record in the 200y free relay as senior Kasey Carlson, sophomore Kasia Wilk, freshman Evan Swenson and Stewart clocked a 1:28.05, bettering the old mark by 0.37. Carlson's leadoff 50 was 0.02 off her school record as the relay clocked an NCAA `A' cut.

    The men followed with a second-place effort in the relay as senior Jack Wagner, freshman Santo Condorelli, Quintero and Colupaev finished in 1:17.74, also a solid `A' cut.

    Freshman Chelsea Chenault led a 2-3-4 finish in the 500y free with a 4:38.96, less than two seconds off an `A' cut. Senior Lynette Lim was third (4:41.07) and sophomore Joanna Stenkvist was fourth (4:44.12), both `B' cuts. Freshman Alexandra Malazdrewicz won the `B' final with a `B' cut of 4:45.91.

     

     

    Stewart next led three Trojans finalists in the 100y fly with a winning time of 51.39, 0.07 off of her school record in another `A' cut effort. Senior Meghan Hawthorne took fourth (53.23) while sophomore Jasmine Tosky was seventh (53.41), both with `B' cuts.

    Senior Chase Bloch was third in the 100y fly in 46.59 while freshman Michael Domagala tied for fourth (46.65), both with strong `B' cut efforts. Sophomore Maclin Davis won the `B' final (46.76) while junior Luca Spinazzola was 14th (47.87), both also with `B' cuts.

    Quintero took second in the 500y free in 4:12.85 (A), which lowered his PR in the event from 4:13.07 and made him the fourth-fastest Trojan in the race. Freshman Reed Malone took third in 4:17.08 (B). In the `B' final, senior Nick Johnson (4:22.34), junior Cary Wright (4:23.64) and sophomore Ted Singley (4:23.75) all posted `B' cuts. Singley went 4:23.34 in prelims.

    Seniors Stina Gardell (1:55.60, A) and Meghan Hawthorne (1:56.62, B) went 1-2 in the 200y IM while Tosky took seventh (1:59.92). She went 1:57.21 in prelims (B). Junior Andrea Kropp won the `B' final with a 1:57.74 (B).

    Colupaev was second in the 200y IM in 1:44.57, 0.47 off his school record and a `B' cut. Freshman Steven Stumph was eighth (1:48.45) after going 1:47.13 in prelims (B). Senior Sean Mulroy was 12th (1:47.61, B).

    After nearing her school record in the 50y free in the 200y free relay, Carlson tied it in the race with a second-place finish (21.90, A). Wilk was second (22.45, B) while Swenson snagged a B cut in 10th (22.83). Stewart got a B cut as well with a 22.94 in prelims.

    Condorelli rocketed into USC's all time Top 10 in the 50y free with a third-place swim of 19.68, making him the fourth-fastest Trojan ever in the race. Wagner was eighth in the final in 19.84. Both were `B' cuts.

    USC's women's 400y medley relay of Stewart, Carlson, Tosky and Wilk took second in 3:33.96, an A cut. USC's B squad of Stenkvist, Kropp, Hawthorne and Chenault was third in 3:36.12, less than two seconds off the A standard.

    The men's quartet of Spinazzola, Sergio Lujan Rivera, Davis and Colupaev took second in 3:06.50 (A).
