    Carlson Breaks 50 Free Record At Winter Nationals

    Junior Kasey Carlson twice went under her school record in the 50y free while a host of Trojans posted NCAA `A' and `B' cuts and finished in the top three on Thursday (Nov. 29) at the 2012 AT&T Winter Nationals at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

    Senior Haley Anderson took second in the 500y free in 4:36.87 (NCAA `A' cut) behind only 2012 Olympic 800m champion Kathleen Ledecky (4:34.53).

    Sophomore Cristian Quintero (4:16.56) and junior Nick Johnson (4:26.42) finished second and seventh, respectively in the men's 500y free. Quintero led by 0.11 with 50 to go before he was overtaken by Michael McBroom (4:16.08). Johnson's prelim of 4:22.53 was a B cut.

    Junior Stina Gardell led five Trojans in the final of the 200y IM, taking second in 1:55.32 (`A'), second behind only Celina Li's 1:55.28. Senior Jessica Schmitt (1:56.49), junior Meghan Hawthorne (1:56.60), freshman Jasmine Tosky (1:56.67) and sophomore Andrea Kropp (1:57.30) finished 4-5-6-7, all with `B' cuts.

    Senior co-captain Alex Lendrum claimed second in the 200y IM (1:44.24, B), behind only Olympic champion Ryan Lochte (1:40.97).



    Carlson, who broke her school record in the 50y free in the opening 200y free relay with a 21.90 (A), went under the old mark (22.10) again in the 50y free with a 22.04, good for fourth overall. Fellow junior Jack Wagner took seventh in the men's 50y free with a 19.79, a solid B cut and a PR.

    USC women's 200y free relay of Carlson, Tosky, freshman Kasia Wilk and senior Christel Simms was third (1:29.47, A) while the women's 400y medley relay of freshman Kendyl Stewart, Carlson, Tosky and Wilk took second (3:32.20, A).

    The men's 200y free relay of Wagner, freshman Fred Abramyan, junior Chase Bloch and freshman Maclin Davis took second (1:19.37). Wagner opened the race with a 19.75 50 (B). USC's 400y medley relay of sophomore Luca Spinazzola, freshman Morten Klarskov, Bloch and Wagner took third in 3:11.12 (B).

    The meet continues Friday and Saturday.
