Carlson, Gardell Headed Back To Finals After Strong Day 2 Prelims

Seniors Kasey Carlson (100y breast) and Stina Gardell (400y IM) again led USC's efforts during the second day of prelims at the 2014 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, each earning a repeat trip to `A' finals Friday (March 21) at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis.
Carlson, second last year in the 100y breast and fourth as a freshman, posted a 59.00 in prelims for the fourth-fastest morning swim. Junior Andrea Kropp finished 32nd (1:01.02).
Gardell earned her second straight trip to the 400y IM `A' final with a 4:07.11 in the final heat of prelims. She was fifth in the final last year. Fellow senior Meghan Hawthorne was aiming for her third straight scoring effort in the event but finished 21st in 4:10.73.
Freshman Chelsea Chenault secured her second consecutive `B' final, finishing ninth in prelims in the 200y free in 1:44.46, 0.16 out of the tie for seventh that closed out the top 8. Sophomore Kasia Wilk was the next best finisher among USC's other four in the event, swimming to 21st (1:45.57). Sophomore Joanna Stenkvist was 34th (1:46.72), freshman Lexie Malazdrewicz made her NCAA debut in a tie for 39th (1:47.47) while senior Lynette Lim was 41st (1:47.52).
Sophomore Kendyl Stewart finished 18th in the 100y fly in 52.35 while sophomore Jasmine Tosky was 46th in 53.70. Stenkvist was 42nd in the 100y back (53.96).
USC's 200y medley relay qualified for the `B' final in 1:37.59 with Stewart, Carlson, Tosky and freshman Evan Swenson.
The Trojans will also swim in the timed finals of the 800y free relay to close tonight's evening session.
